Scott Boras – The Man, The Myth, The legend
I have to tell you Scott Boras is one hell of an agent. Say what you want about the guy, say that is he bad for baseball, but I will tell you what, he gets his guy the money. Lets look at Lowe, he told him months and months ago that he would get him 4 years at 60mm, he told him to just wait out the market and a team would come. So for the past 3 weeks Lowe has been sitting on his ass and looking at an offer sheet from the NY Mets for 3 & 36mm. He probably called Boras all the time asking if something better would come, and Boras just waited. Then the domino’s fell into place, Smoltz signed with the Red Sox and that left a team with an opening, with an owner that has shown they will spend money, albeit not like the Yankees, Sox, Met & Angels, but in that second tier of teams. Inevitably Boras got his man the 4 years and 60 million to the Braves.
The place I really see Boras screwed up was with Varitek. In hindsight when the Red Sox offered him arbitration, which would have been 1 year and about 12-13 million, he should have accepted. The reason he did not accept, in my opinion, is because Boras thought the Red Sox would follow up with a 2 year and 20mm offer, which never came. Now for a team to sign ‘Tek they will not only have to pay him but they will have to pay the Red Sox with 2 compensation draft picks, so now ‘Tek is sitting on his ass with ZERO offers on the table, and the amount of teams truly interested in signing him are minimal at best. It must be tough to go back to your client and say look “I misread the Market and the best you are going to get in 13 million for 2 years”, so at minimum he will lost his client 5-7 million dollar.
Let’s see what happens with Manny, but my guess is he will get him more than the 2 years and 45mm the Dodgers offered
