Pettitte Close to a Deal With the Yanks

After not accepting a $10 million deal after the 2008 season, Andy Pettitte is reportedly close to signing with the Yankees for $6 million guaranteed and could be worth up to $12 million with incentives. If this goes through, it would mean that the Yankees rotation would be:
- CC
- Wang
- AJ
- Pettitte
- Joba
Bottom line is that is a kick ass rotation. The slew of young arms that were up for the fifth spot (Hughes, Aceves, Coke, etc.) will now either be available for long relief/bullpen help to get some major league innings or sent to AAA for the season.
Now while the Yankees have certainly spent a lot of money this year on builidng up their team let’s not forget that their COULD be a lot of young talent coming up in the next year or two.
One question I have though, is why has Pettitte waited this long to make a move? If he has been contemplating retirement then I have no beef with him. If he has been shopping for another deal, whether it be with the Astros or whomever, then it kind of pisses me off. At the end of last season he said he wanted to play with the Yankees or retire. I am sure he will say all the right things when the time comes but I am still curious as to why he didn’t take the original offer.
VIVA LA YANKEES!
UPDATE*** Pettitte has signed with the Yankees for a $5.5 million guaranteed contract worth up to $12 million with incentives.
